In a violent temper, he broke his son Danny’s arm, causing him to lose his job as a teacher. He resists at first, but the resort eventually overcomes him. He becomes a monster. Wendy and Danny overpower him locking him in the storage space, but the phantom of the previous caretaker enables him outside after making Jack guarantee to deliver him Danny and kill Wendy. Jack attacks Wendy with among the resort’s roque mallets, but she escapes to the caretaker’s package and locks herself in the restroom. She slashes his hand with a razor to prevent him from breaking down the door completely.

He rushes back into the hotel, but he is severely injured by Jack when he arrives. The hotel causes Jack to party in his skull with a mallet so he is unrecognizable. When Danny reminds Jack that he’s neglected to relieve the pressure on the shaky boiler, then Jack rushes into the cellar.

The epilogue takes place the following summer. Hallorann has obtained a job at a hotel in Maine, and he comforts Danny for the loss of his dad. Wendy spends time recovering from her injuries.

The book has many significant topics dealing with human nature and our internal struggles. Jack starts as a dominating character trying to start over, but ultimately he’s not able to include his darkness. His struggles with violence and alcohol are exacerbated by the hotel’s dark forces.

Another theme common to horror stories is the existence of evil stays long after the physical thing is gone. We do not know if Jack was truly possessed by the hotel, or if his natural propensity for violence was accomplished within his isolation. He dreams of climbing the social ladder, instead of being a writer, but in the end, he’s unable to satisfy the fantasies he needs for himself.
